Here is a good link about them: http://membracid.wordpress.com/2010/01/06/ask-an-entomologist-snow-fleas/

EllenEllen Snyderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09158932570826154360noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2194161742476128031.post-72734569145687977792012-12-30T07:03:50.388-05:002012-12-30T07:03:50.388-05:00Hi John,

Yahoo!

The snow fleas (more properly called springtails) come out on sunny days when it is a bit warmer. The day I saw them was lightly above freezing and under blue skies. I think we see them more in spring because there are more warmer days.

Happy snowshoeing.

EllenEllen Snyderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09158932570826154360noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2194161742476128031.post-86438664879252655582012-12-29T19:05:47.344-05:002012-12-29T19:05:47.344-05:00Snow fleas---that's a new one to me! It's a perfect depiction of a beautiful day in winter.

Regarding the snow fleas, I don't recall seeing those little guys here in northern New Hampshire until late winter/early spring. Is it fairly common to spot them in your part of the State at this time of year?

John
1HappyHikerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02242409292439585691noreply@blogger.com
